Folky, acoustic pop specialists The Lumineers made a stop in Portsmouth Wednesday night. Hampton’s Maria H. Thomas, who plays bass in the local band The Framers , attended and shared this review. For the past year or so, The Lumineers have dominated the radio waves with their catchy folk-pop juggernaut hit song, “Ho Hey. The evening was kicked off the harmony-laden blues rock of J Roddy Walston and the Business a Richmond-based band that scored points with the crowd for being local boys.
Cold War Kids were a draw themselves — the California boys have been quietly building a strong following since and are now making waves with their alternative dance punk hit “Miracle Mile. Acoustic folk rock seems to be at odds with today’s typical radio fare, though the roots revival has cultivated the success of deserving bands like The Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, The Civil Wars, The Avett Brothers and more.
The Lumineers’ simple, stripped-down tunes have resonated with listeners. Schultz headed up the group with his rich, sincere vocal style. The cello and upright, saloon-style piano brought an element of classical tradition to a setting that is generally more closely associated with bombastic hard rock and bass-thumping pop.
The stage was set with risers that resembled something out of an art deco nightclub and was hung with ornate descending chandeliers. The goal of the evening was to bring an intimacy to a large outdoor venue — no small feat for any band.
Ready for relationship
I nervously signed up to my first ‘Virtual’ Speed dating event for 29th July There was no refund offered -just a message to say I was now enrolled on an event in October!! I messaged to say this was not acceptable and I simply wanted my money back. The phone no on the website doesn’t work and it’s all beginning to feel very much like a scam. Don’t waste your money on this site – you may be lucky but, if like me, the event is cancelled, it is impossible to speak to anyone and so far, it is not clear if my refund will happen.
Not a pleasant experience.

As we do often,we met another married couple who are longtime friends of ours. We went to the Dolphin Striker ,not for the first time, but we hadn’t been in awhile. We had made reservations earlier in the week and our table was comfortable, but also provided a great view of the Piscataqua River and the tugboats at berth. Our server was a young lady who was sweet, capable and attentive. The real story ,though was the food- WOW- we all pretty much agreed our meals were as good as we’d ever had anywhere, anytime.
My wife had Beef Wellington which she thought was superb. I had,as did another at the table, incredibly well prepared Scallops. I will just say it was fantastic. The other entree was Haddock Oscar. That was outstanding too.

As countries around the world slowly begin to come back to life, governments are experimenting with exactly how prescriptive they should be when giving guidelines on how people should navigate the new normal — including on sex and dating. It has involved some trial and error. A spokeswoman for the agency told the Dutch news website NU. Dutch officials said that if one partner was isolated because of suspected or confirmed coronavirus infection, sex at a distance was still possible, such as by telling erotic stories.
Earlier in the pandemic, the Dutch government, like others around the world, had advised people to have sex only with steady partners.

Yet few universities have policies on appropriate teaching relationships. T he MeToo movement and institutional sexual abuse scandals have shown that sexual exploitation is widespread across many areas of society, but it has a distinctive pattern in universities. This stems from the power imbalances between students and staff in higher education, and the ways in which these can be exploited by staff to gain sexual access to students. This power imbalance, enabled by the blurred boundaries between staff and students, can lead to toxic cultures in which students are required to make a judgment as to what behaviour is appropriate.
Equally, refusing sexual advances from staff or reporting such behaviour places students at risk of punitive responses, such as loss of access to teaching, resources, references, job opportunities and career networking. A new National Union of Students survey shows that fewer than one in ten respondents who experienced sexual misconduct from staff reported the behaviour to their institution.
This was often because they were unsure whether the institution viewed the behaviour as acceptable, since a third of UK universities do not have a policy on staff-student relationships. To address staff sexual misconduct, universities need to introduce professional boundaries that clearly define the expected relationship between a staff member and a student, as in the medical and therapeutic professions.
